Principal's Message
Welcome to southern Hills Middle School!
Welcome to Cougar Country!
Southern Hills Middle School is located in the south Boulder community and is home to over 500 Cougars. With a rich history of academic excellence, SHMS is a long time John J. Irwin School of Excellence award recipient and has been recognized as one of the top middle schools in the state of Colorado. Behind the academic outcomes is an experienced staff that brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record in supporting students in their middle years both academically and socially. Across the campus instruction is designed with the vision of creating an environment where students learn to work together and communicate effectively. Whether it is specialized programming, accelerated coursework, gifted and talented support, interesting elective classes, or extra curricular offerings, there is something for every student at Southern Hills.
The middle school years are a critical time for students as they become more independent, build critical executive functioning skills, and begin to establish their own identity. At Southern Hills we embrace the mission of ensuring students build connections, foster healthy relationships, and find a sense of belonging. To address the distraction that technology brings we require that cell phones/smart watches/earbuds remain “away for the day” in student lockers and that lunchtime is tech free. This allows for an environment where students are able to connect in the cafeteria, on the fields, and in their classrooms.
We take great pride in the work we do with students and families and believe that our best work is done in partnership. We are grateful for strong parent and community support as it allows us to help our students effectively navigate the middle school years. We simply could not accomplish all we do without you!
The Cougars are made up of some of the best kids I have ever had the pleasure to work with. I am grateful for the opportunity to both lead and be part of the Southern Hills community.

Melinda Murphy
