Welcome to southern Hills Middle School!
Greetings from the Principal's Office!
Southern Hills Middle School has a distinguished tradition of high academic standards and outstanding student achievement. We take great pride in providing students with a foundation of academic excellence in conjunction with our Cougar Values of Respect, Responsibility, Safety and Kindness. While student learning is always of primary importance, we also value the social and emotional well-being of all of our students.
There are many reasons why Southern Hills, a perennial John J. Irwin School of Excellence Award winner, continues to be an excellent learning environment for all students. One reason is the highly dedicated teachers and staff who work with our students each day. Meeting the individual needs of each student is always a challenge, yet our staff continuously strives to reach this goal. In addition, several faculty members have distinguished themselves on a local and state level with numerous awards and acknowledgements. We are also dedicated to providing a 21st Century learning environment. Challenging thinking and building problem solving skills is all enhanced with technology such as SmartBoards in every classroom and the use of Chromebooks. Southern Hills also has an extremely active and supportive parent community involving a large number of wonderful volunteers. Our parent community, along with Southern Hill’s tradition of strong home-to-school communication, remains a key component of our students’ success. Southern Hills is proud of our survey results from the parent community indicating a very high level of satisfaction with our school’s overall program.
SHMS students are among the best in Colorado as evidenced from a number of categories. In addition to very high test scores, students have been recognized for outstanding achievement in local, state and national competitions in science, history, math, music and TAG activities. Many of our students are supported by accelerated and honors classes in math, language arts and world language. Southern Hills is also fortunate to possess a comprehensive Intensive Learning Center Program that includes peer tutoring to serve diverse learners from around the school district. Whatever the student need or learning style, all students have at their disposal a wide range of curricular offerings in addition to the rigors of the traditional core program.
Most importantly, Southern Hills is committed to meeting the needs of all of our students. From the high achieving students to those who struggle, our staff development and educational resources have centered on strategies to meet our students’ educational demands. Though we enjoy an outstanding student and staff climate, we are always working on ways to improve in this area in order to foster even greater student learning. We pride ourselves in providing a safe and welcoming environment that allows for all students to thrive. I am proud of the many accomplishments Southern Hills has achieved and excited to serve such a fantastic community of learners!
